The Gumnut Baby Area

The Gumnut Baby Area at Palmdale, has been especially designed to celebrate the lives of children taken too soon. Incorporating a Baby Burial Area and a Butterfly Memorial Wall, these beautifully landscaped gardens commemorate lives of the innocence and provide a place for their family to unite.

The Baby Burial Area, is a garden where only babies and young children can be placed to rest. Our Butterfly Memorial Wall, has been crafted to remember babies lost during pregnancy or birth, its colourful motif a fitting home for little lives cut short. This area can also be used for babies lost in decades gone past and is a perfect way of remembering those passed in times before memorialisation was possible.

Palmdale also has limited memorial sites bordering the Gumnut Baby Area, available exclusively for the parents and families of those babies and children memorialised in these special gardens. We invite you to visit our picturesque grounds for a private inspection.

The Bunya Nut Trees & Their History

Before you enter the beautiful Memorial Gardens at Palmdale, spot the towering Bunya Nut Trees that line both sides of Palmdale Road. Planted in 1882, the trees are a window back in time. The trees are able to produce pine cones of up to three kilograms or more, giving plentiful Bunya Nuts, which were an important food source for the local Indigenous community.

The now-mature trees were initially planted by Mr Frederick William Stoddart, who owned the land where Palmdale Memorial Park now sits. What we now know as Palmdale Road was once Mr Stoddart’s private driveway leading up to a large, luxurious manor called ‘Palmdale’. Across the 1821-acres of accompanying land that he owned, Palmdale was home to one of the largest orchards and citrus farms in the whole Commonwealth. The orchard was known for their innovative practices in storing the fruits, which many orchards promptly followed in their practices.

The estate was then one of the largest parcels of land to then be offered up for sale and subdivided of its time. All proceeds of the funds went to charitable organisations, in particular many children’s charities, as Mr and Mrs Stoddart were famous for their charitable and kind nature among the community.

Palmdale Lawn Cemetery and Memorial Park is a member of the Cemeteries and Crematoria Association of NSW.
